Playlab asks organizations and spaces two questions: whether they include students, and which ages those students are. Each member is marked as a Student or Non-student, and each student gets an age band: Ages 13–15, Ages 16–17, Ages 18+, or Not sure. A group with students of different ages can have more than one age band.

Where it’s set

  • When you create an organization or a space. The form asks Will there be students in this space? (or in this organization). Choose Yes, No, or Not sure. After Yes, check every age that applies. Then confirm your answers.
  • When you invite members. The invite dialog asks Are the people you’re inviting students? Choose No, not students and you confirm everyone you’re inviting is 18 or older. Choose Yes, students and you confirm they’re within the space’s or organization’s current ages. See Adding members and inviting users.
  • Through rostering (Clever or ClassLink). Student status and age bands come from your school’s records automatically.

How to change it

The organization Members page and each space’s Members tab have an Ages and Student Status box with the group’s answer. Click Edit to change it. The Student / Age column shows each member’s answer. To change one member, click ā‹® on their row and choose Set Student / Age. To change several, tick their checkboxes and click Set Student / Age. Who can change it
  • Organization Owners, on the organization’s Members page.
  • A space’s Owners and Managers, on its Members tab. This never changes the space’s own Owners and Managers.
What happens when answers differ
  • If someone else already set a member’s answer, Playlab doesn’t overwrite it. After you save, Playlab lists those members with who set their answer and where, and you choose whose answers to replace.
  • Changing the group’s answer in the Ages and Student Status box doesn’t change answers that came from rostering or members already marked as Not a student. Answering Yes for an organization doesn’t change its Owners or Builders, and answering Yes for a space doesn’t change its Owners or Managers.
  • When a group has more than one age band, new students start in the youngest one. If Not sure is one of the group’s ages, new students start as Not sure.
  • If your organization uses rostering, student status and ages come from your roster and can’t be edited in Playlab.

Why it matters

Different age groups need different protections when using AI. Playlab isn’t limiting any features by age today, but in the future some features and safety settings will depend on age band and student status. Keeping this information accurate means your students get the right experience when that happens. Playlab never stores dates of birth, only the age band.
